‘California Coast’ Chess Set

Title: ‘California Coast’
Material (Pieces): Modeled in Solidworks. 3D printed in SLS steel via Shapeways.
Material (Board): Redwood Burl base. Hand carved squares with stone/pebble inlays with fossils.

Description: A chest set I designed and built based on inspiration from the California coastline. The board was made from a piece semi-petrified California Redwood burl. The dark squares were hand carved and filled with pebbles and rocks from the northern coast. Fossils and minerals are hidden within the stones to stress natures foundation of the coastline. In contrast, the pieces representing the major metropolitan areas of northern and southern California were 3D modeled on a computer and 3D printed in steel via selective laser sintering.
